In 1889, barely a decade after the arrival of the railroad, the University of New Mexico was founded just over a mile east of the tracks, pushing the city’s expansion further east. Today UNM is New Mexico’s largest university, occupying over 600 acres along the old Route 66 (now Central Avenue) and serving more than 25,000 students.
