Albuquerque is a hotspot of movie and television production. NBCUniversal has a TV and film studio in the city. Netflix Studios also has a hub in Albuquerque, which has brought in even more filming opportunities. One of those popular series is “Ransom Canyon.” This Netflix series is set in a small Texas town, but it was filmed in New Mexico.
Based on a series of books, the show focuses on the conflicts among three ranching families fighting for control of the land. Josh Duhamel and Minka Kelly, who grew up in Albuquerque, star. Kelly said filming in New Mexico “made me see Albuquerque with new eyes. It made me appreciate it and love all the beauty that it has to offer that I never really was able to recognize when I was a child or a teenager.”

“Ransom Canyon” used multiple filming locations in Albuquerque. Many scenes were filmed at Netflix Studios, but a handful of other locations were used. A dinner party in Episode 2 was shot at Los Poblanos Historic Inn & Organic Farm. Wander through the lavender fields, dine at Campo, the on-site restaurant, and spend the night in one of Los Poblanos’ rustic-chic rooms. Valley High School, in Albuquerque’s North Valley, was where scenes at Ransom Canyon High School were filmed. Scenes at the University of Texas Austin in Episode 8 were filmed at the Johnson Center on the University of New Mexico campus.
Other Filming Locations
Albuquerque makes a great home base to explore other filming locations in the state. Just south of Albuquerque, the Southwest Event Center in Los Lunas was used in Episode 3 of "Ransom Canyon" for a rodeo scene. Bonanza Creek Ranch in Santa Fe served as the backdrop for one of the houses in the series. Many scenes were also filmed in downtown Las Vegas, New Mexico.
