The U.S. Chamber of Commerce and Siemens honored the City of Albuquerque in May 2008 with a Sustainable Community Award in the Large Community category for AlbuquerqueGreen, a comprehensive sustainability plan.
The Crowne Plaza Albuquerque (formerly the Hilton Albuquerque) has become the first, and so far the only hotel in the state, to receive New Mexico's Green Zia Environmental Excellence Recognition Program for its efforts to prevent pollution and implement "green initiatives." View media release
The March 2008 issued of Popular Science rated Albuquerque as the 16th greenest city in America. The basis of the rating was determined by the use of renewable energy, availability of high quality public transportation, the number of green building (certified by the US Green Building Council), recycling and how important its citizens consider environmental issues.
Former Mayor Martin Chavez was the only mayor of a U.S. city to be invited to the global conference, "Citizens of the Earth": The Paris Conference for Global Ecological Governance, in February 2007.
Albuquerque won the 2006 World Leadership Award under the category of Utilities for its Sustainable Water Management Planning. The award was presented in London in December 2006.
