New Mexico Games Announces 2026 Athletes of the Year
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - (Sept. 25, 2026) – The New Mexico Games is proud to announce its 2026 Athletes of the Year, recognizing two athletes whose dedication, perseverance, and accomplishments exemplify the spirit of competition and sportsmanship: powerlifter Robert Lazarin of Los Alamos and Albuquerque-based figure skater Cece Engberg.
Each year, the New Mexico Games honors athletes who demonstrate outstanding achievement in their sport while inspiring others through their commitment, character, and passion for athletics.
At 27, Robert Lazarin has established himself as a formidable competitor in powerlifting while balancing his athletic career with his work as a professional engineer.
Born and raised in El Paso, Texas, Lazarin developed his passion for athletics through football, playing from a young age through the collegiate level. Strength training remained an important part of his life, eventually leading him to discover powerlifting and pursue the sport at a competitive level.
Lazarin’s recent accomplishments include first place at the 2025 Pan American Powerlifting Championships, the 2025 NAPF Championship along with multiple meet records, and a second-place finish at the 2026 Powerlifting America Open Nationals. He has also earned gold medals at the New Mexico Games in both 2025 and 2026.
Beyond competition, Lazarin credits his family with playing an important role in his journey. He is grateful for the continued support of his wife, Andronette, and daughter, Raelynn, as he continues to pursue his goals in powerlifting.
At just 11 years old, Cece Engberg has already developed a deep passion for figure skating and a reputation for bringing enthusiasm, determination, and positivity to the ice.
Engberg began skating in 2018 at age three through the Learn to Skate program at the Outpost Ice Arenas. From her first lessons, she embraced the sport with a smile, an enthusiastic attitude, and a willingness to learn and take on new challenges.
She made her competitive debut at the Santa Fe SkateFest in May 2023. Although she was initially reluctant to compete, the experience quickly changed her perspective. Since then, Engberg has approached competitions with confidence and excitement, embracing both the challenges of performing and the repeated practice required to continue improving.
Her coachability and determination are matched by her support for her fellow skaters. Engberg is known for encouraging and complimenting other athletes, demonstrating the sportsmanship and camaraderie that define youth athletics.
Together, Lazarin and Engberg represent two very different sports and generations of athletes but share the same qualities at the heart of the New Mexico Games: dedication, perseverance, sportsmanship, and a genuine passion for their craft.
The New Mexico Games congratulates Robert Lazarin and Cece Engberg on being named the 2026 Athletes of the Year and celebrates their accomplishments both on and off the field of competition.
