The area now known as New Mexico is the oldest wine-producing region in the United States. With a rich history in grape-growing and wine-making, award-winning wineries aren’t hard to come by in Albuquerque. If you want to experience multiple wineries in the city in a short span of time, book a tour with Vino Vans. A ticket on one of its tours covers it all — tasting flights at three wineries, snacks and transportation. I recently experienced a tour with Vino Vans, and it was informative and fun.

The Vino Vans driver will pick you up at any location in the city, including at a hotel or home. Just tell them the address, and they’ll be there to pick you up. Once I was aboard the spacious and comfortable van, Kelly, one of the company’s owners, provided a rundown of the three wineries our group would be visiting. The wineries are chosen to provide a variety of ambiences and types of wine. Our three stops were Gruet Winery, Casa Rondeña Winery and Sheehan Winery in Old Town.

On the way to our first stop, Kelly provided some in-depth history of wine in New Mexico. It was incredibly informative and gave a great overview of the origins of some of the wines we were tasting.

Our first stop was Gruet Winery. Gruet allows outside food in its tasting room, so Vino Vans brought some delicious bread, olive oil and cheese. It was so good we were almost finished by the time the wine was served. The staff at Gruet are very knowledgeable. There were four of us, and we were all able to get specially crafted tastings to our own preferences. The tasting room is beautiful, with a light, airy space inside and a patio perfect for watching sunsets.

After we were done, we loaded up in the van to be shuttled to our next stop, Casa Rondeña in Los Ranchos de Albuquerque. This winery is absolutely stunning, and the tasting room is elegant and stylish. We opted to sip our wine outside next to a beautiful pond. After we finished, we wandered around the vineyard. Casa Rondeña offers two wine tasting options, four red wines or four white wines.

Finally, we stopped at Sheehan Winery’s tasting room in Plaza Don Luis in Old Town. This modern tasting room is a little more tucked away, and makes a great atmosphere for conversing with your loved ones over a glass of wine. Sheehan had a couple pre-made tasting flights, or you could create your own, which is what I opted to do. Sheehan’s menu is clearly labeled with dry wines and sweet wines, so it makes it easier to determine which wines suit your preferences. The staff at Sheehan were friendly and helpful. They provided in-depth knowledge about each wine each member of our group tried. Vino Vans also provided some delicious nuts and chocolate to close out the tour.

We arrived back at our starting location just about four hours later. Overall, the luxury wine tour with Vino Vans was a big hit. It was great to be transported between the wineries, so we could drink worry-free. Both of the owners know a lot about wine, and if anyone asked a question that stumps them, they had the answer in no time. Vino Vans is a great experience for any group of people who love wine.
