At Juno brewery on December 21, please join us for a release party for 'I Am The Grave', the first in a series of dark-fiction fantasy novels written by MT Angel. A Q&A about the novel with the author will be followed by stunning tarot-themed pole performances. Copies of the novel will be available for purchase, and the will be doing book signings.
Blending the worlds of dark fiction, fantasy, and coming of age, "I Am The Grave" follows the lives of four troubled young men residing in Portland, Oregon in the early 2000's. The first of a four book series called 'Arcana', protagonists Kaleb, Harley, Beau, and Z all have dreams of escaping their current realities to rise in fame on the alt-rock scene. As they meet and form a band, they soon discover that they have more in common than mere musical aspirations. One by one, they awaken to their magical abilities from a source known as the 'Tarot'. With the help of their zany band manager, they realize their mission: uniting the Tarot once and for all and restoring balance to the world.

In this series, the magical abilities of the wands, cups, pentacles, and swords of the tarot serve as a tool for the characters' personal development, encouraging them to confront their own personal struggles with heavy themes including addiction, self-harm, chronic depression, loss of a parent, and trauma from being raised in the foster care system.
As global awareness increases about the impact of polarization and extremism, I wanted to tell a story of four young men who manage to counter toxic masculinity to become vulnerable with one another despite their differences. Together, my protagonists jaggedly overcome the obstacles presented to them by their class, race, ethnicity, sexuality, and upbringing to leave a mark on the world with both their music and their magic.
