This extensively illustrated presentation by Ambassador William Itoh features examples of daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes and paper prints (including cartes-de-visite, cabinets and stereoviews) which represent the introduction and development of photography in the Unites States. These enduring images chronicle the story of America in the 19th century including the drama of the Civil War and the opening of the American West.
William H. Itoh is Professor of the Practice in the Department of Public Policy at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. A career Foreign Service officer, he served as Executive Secretary of the National Security Council at the White House and as Ambassador to Thailand. He holds BA and MA degrees in History from UNM and was a logistics officer in the US Air Force and Assistant Professor of History at California State University Humboldt before entering the Foreign Service.
