New Mexico Shakespeare Festival

Overview

Classical theater joins the urban cityscape of Albuquerque as the City of Albuquerque and The Vortex Theatre present The New Mexico Shakespeare Festival with 15 free evening performances at the NM Veterans Memorial on south Louisiana, beginning June 7.

William Shakespeare's tragedy Romeo & Juliet and the romance Love’s Labour’s Lost will include theatrical lighting and sound during the fully-costumed productions. The shows begin at 7:30 pm Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.

Love’s Labour’s Lost, directed by Shepard Sobel, follows the efforts of the King of Navarre and his lords to woo the Princess of France and her ladies, while under an oath of scholarship and denial of female companionship. Sobel founded The Pearl Theatre Company, a professional resident acting company that produced a classical repertory in New York City. As artistic director from 1984 through 2009, he was responsible for the nature and quality of all performances and programs.

The well-known tragedy, Romeo & Juliet, focuses on young lovers who cannot surmount their family’s long-time enmity. Directed by Peter Shea Kierst, Artistic Director of the Festival. He has been an acclaimed actor, director, and practitioner of theater for many years.
