Overview

Join us for Neon Trinity, the highly anticipated solo exhibition by Adam Bustamante!

A swirling sea of liquid fire quietly surges within a thin shell of rock; atop the rock: us.

This describes our planet and society. Scientists and sociologists would probably argue that's an oversimplification. Linguists might be crabby about what is likely the incorrect use of a semicolon in that sentence. But set all that aside for now because we have art to discuss. This series of paintings serves as an ode to the aforementioned phenomenon. A layer of flowing and vibrant paint is covered with sections of jagged and muted crust. Above all this, evidence of humanity appears in the form of gears, knots, computer chips, etc. as well as excerpts from highly revered texts such as the Declaration of Independence and transcripts from Keeping up with the Kardashians…items that could only be conceived by profoundly developed and civilized intellects.

This trilogy of lava, land, and society can extend as a metaphor to describe a variety of trios. Natural, unnatural, supernatural. Past, present, future. Rock, paper, scissors. Alvin and the chipmunks. The possibilities are endless.

One intriguing application for the trinity is body, mind, and soul. The soul, almighty and everlasting, is entombed in a fragile husk governed by an egomaniacal consciousness. The body is armor used as weaponry; the mind, a sorcerer that turns water into wine, and wine into poison. The only vessels we have to traverse our otherwise indomitable terrain are the very forces that hold us hostage. A prison cell and a sanctuary, a ladder and a trap door, a devil and an angel, all working in tandem to simultaneously keep us captive and set us free.
