Lecture: Red Rocks from Earth to Mars

Hear from an expert on the small iron concretions called “blueberries” and the layered sedimentary rocks that were discovered on Mars by NASA Rovers - and also occur in New Mexico and other parts of the Southwest. Comparisons with terrestrial geology suggest past water on Mars and offer the tantalizing possibility of the development of extraterrestrial life in the past on Mars.

Marjorie Chan, Ph.D. is a Professor in the Dept of Geology and Geophysics, University of Utah, where she has worked for 35 years with a strong focus on Utah sedimentary geology. Her recent research has applied Earth examples to better understand Martian geology. She has 131 peer-reviewed publications and has been featured in National Geographic and Discovery Channel documentary films. She was the 2014 Geological Society of America’s Distinguished International Lecturer and the 2014 Plenary speaker for the International Sedimentology Congress (International Association of Sedimentologists) held in Geneva, Switzerland. She is a Fellow of the Geological Society of America.
