A “Kaleidoscope” of color and form is the exciting reality of Amapola Gallery’s Featured Artists for March. Elzbieta Kaleta’s paper art and photographs, and Carol Lutz’s vibrant glass creations, shift and dance in the lucky viewer’s eye.
Named a State Treasure by a previous governor, Elzbieta is esteemed for her traditional Polish cut paper images and for the clever way in which she has adapted the technique to Southwest motifs. With her artist’s eye, she is also a gifted and cheerful photographer as will be evident here. Images include charming carriage horses, dignified ravens and a series of hummingbirds. The distinctive architectural details of New Mexico are represented as well.
Carol Lutz moved to Albuquerque in 1999, and she came “to appreciate the ever-changing colors in the landscape.” She translates this appreciation into fused glass, hand-cutting and gluing pieces for her designs. Some are then slumped into rounded shapes. Finished pieces range from small dishes to spectacular, very vertical, multi-colored wall pieces, evocative of Yei figures yet very much the artist’s own. As the light shifts, it results in a constant change in color and pattern.
Like a kaleidoscope, Elzbieta Kaleta and Carol Lutz create organic wholes from myriad bits and pieces and color that breaks and repeats—symmetry from fragments.
The exhibit runs for the entire month of March. Open daily 10 to 5.
