Overview

The Sagrada Gallery announces its upcoming exhibition, Italia: A Material Study of Post-War Italian Ceramics, opening with a public reception on February 14, 2026, and on view through April 11, 2026.

Presented at The Sagrada Gallery, this exhibition examines Italian ceramic production during the post-war period, with a focus on pottery and ceramic objects created for export to the American market between 1955 and 1975. The show explores how material experimentation, regional craft traditions, and modernist aesthetics converged during a pivotal moment in Italian design history.

Following World War II, Italy emerged as a global leader in ceramic innovation. Small workshops and larger studios alike produced objects that balanced utility and sculpture responding to American demand for modern interiors while retaining distinctly Italian approaches to form, glaze, and surface. The exhibition presents a curated selection of vessels, decorative forms, and functional pottery that reflect this dialogue between artisan craft and international commerce.

Rather than centering individual designers alone, Italia approaches the material holistically, positioning ceramics as cultural artifacts shaped by post-war recovery, transatlantic trade, and evolving domestic rituals. Emphasis is placed on glaze chemistry, firing techniques, regional production styles, and the subtle variations that distinguish studio work from industrial output.

The opening reception will take place on Friday, February 14, 2026, inviting the public to engage with the collection in an intimate gallery setting. A closing reception will be held on April 11, 2026, marking the conclusion of the exhibition.

Italia: A Material Study of Post-War Italian Ceramics is part of The Sagrada Gallery’s ongoing commitment to presenting design history through an educational and materially driven lens bridging scholarship, collecting, and contemporary cultural interest in mid-century objects.
