Overview

In 1926, the Fred Harvey Company, in conjunction with the Santa Fe Railroad, began offering 1- 2- and 3-day "Detours" of historic and scenic sites in northern New Mexico, led by young woman known as “Couriers.” This presentation will provide an overview of the Detours, with a focus on the Couriers.

Historic Albuquerque, along with three other historic preservation groups, are putting on the New Mexico Route 66 Centennial Speaker Series. The presentations will be provided free to the public on the 4th Saturday of each month in 2026 (except December) from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm at 12 different locations simultaneously. Most of these sites are on the Mother Road. For a detailed list of these talks and their locations, please check www.Route66Speakers.org
