The Winter Series is about to begin! La Emi –– New Mexico's rising flamenco star –– will be performing once again this holiday season at the Benitez Cabaret theater!
La Emi began studying flamenco at the age of four with the Maria Benitez Institute for Spanish Arts (ISA). At the age of ten, she began working with the Institute’s youth company, Flamenco’s Next Generation. At age 12, La Emi began teaching within the Northern New Mexico public school system. In 2006, she began teaching for Moving Arts Española and ISA.
In 2010, she performed in the production of “El Pintor” at the National Hispanic Cultural Center in Albuquerque. La Emi also began working with Compañia Chuscales y Mina Fajardo, where she continues to collaborate today. In 2011, 2012, and 2015, she performed with Entreflamenco, the company of Antonio Granjero and Estefania Ramirez, at the Lodge of Santa Fe. In December of 2011, La Emi was nominated and selected as one of the 12 young and emerging artists in Pasatiempo. She received the 2012 Santa Fe Mayor’s Melissa Engestrom Youth Artist Award for Excellence in the Arts. In 2013, 2014, and 2016 she performed with the Juan Siddi Flamenco Santa Fe.
Since 2013, La Emi has traveled to Spain to study intensively with Carmela Greco and La Popi as well as José Galván, Juana Amaya, Yolanda Heredia, Ivan Vargas Heredia, Orombo, and Rocio Alcaide Ruiz. She has performed under the direction of Carmela Greco, José Galván, and Torombo and at major venues and events including the Carmela Greco Seminario de Flamenco y Danza Española in Madrid; Cueva Los Tarantos, in the Sacramonte of Granada; in Sevilla at the Teatro Alameda Festival Flamenco; and the Café de Chinitas in Madrid.
Currently, she is teaching at the EmiArteFlamenco Academy, as well as performing in many venues throughout the country.
In the summer of 2018, she launched her professional career with Heritage Hotels producing performances at the Benitez Cabaret at The Lodge at Santa Fe.
