First Forum & Spirit Awards: Sustainable Journalism

Overview

New Mexico First hosts its biennial First Forum Lecture Series at UNM's Keller Hall at Popejoy. A reception at 5:30 p.m. kicks off the event, which features a panel entitled "Sustainable Journalism: Preserving the Fourth Estate." Panelists, moderated by New Mexico In Focus host Gene Grant, explore how to strengthen journalism and support the next generation of ethical, intellectually curious journalists, to ensure New Mexicans have a trusted free press for their personal, economic and voting decisions.

Also at the event, New Mexico First presents its Spirit Awards, which honor public officials, civic leaders and journalists who make positive impacts in New Mexico and put good policy or fair coverage above partisan politics. U.S. Sen. Tom Udall is among this year's honorees, for lifetime achievement. Others are N.M. Sen. Clemente Sanchez and N.M. Rebecca Dow, for bipartisanship; Trip Jennings, for journalistic excellence; and KOB-TV 4 and Katherine Freeman, for civic leadership.
