Bread remains a staple item for many people who enjoy feeding ducks and geese, but it's not healthy for these waterfowl or the ponds they swim in.
The ABQ BioPark will host a Bread Amnesty Day to raise awareness of the issue and get some healthier bird food into visitors' hands. The event will occur from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. September 1-3 at the Tingley Beach boat pond.
"Bread is not only bad for ducks and geese, but it also contaminates the water in our boat pond," said Kathy Lang, ABQ BioPark Curator of Tingley Beach. "During our Bread Amnesty Day, we'll take your bread, pretzels, popcorn, Cheetos and other unhealthy foods and trade them for waterfowl-friendly pellets and grains." The event will also feature educational materials about why bread is bad for birds and water quality.
