Ski New Mexico announced the grand opening of the New Mexico Ski Museum on August 7, 2008. The museum is located at the base of Sandia Peak Tramway and was created to document the history and development of skiing in New Mexico.

The museum contains a full size gondola from the early 60’s, photographs dating back to the 1800s and ski equipment and other memorabilia. The museum also honors 15 individuals in the Hall of Fame who have made a significant impact to the ski industry in New Mexico.

One of the individuals with a significant impact is Robert J. Nordhaus. Nordhaus, who served in World War II (from 1942 to 1944), developed Sandia Peak Ski Area and was the co-founder of the Sandia Peak Tramway. A trip to Europe inspired the construction of the Tram, but Nordhaus and partner Ben Abruzzo, made the idea a reality. It would connect Albuquerque to the top of Sandia Peak, combining breathtaking views with transportation for skiers. Other members currently in the Hall of Fame are Ben Abruzzo and Ernie Blake.

“We have people like Robert Nordhaus and his peers to thank for the success this industry enjoys today,” said Michael Cerletti, Secretary of the New Mexico Tourism Department. “I hope all New Mexicans will visit this new museum, which recognizes their efforts on behalf of us all.”

The New Mexico Ski Hall of Fame is organized and operated as an exempt 501(c) (3) charitable organization.
