ALBUQUERQUE – The National Hispanic Cultural Center (NHCC) announces its latest collaborative theatrical project with Santa Fe based Teatro Paraguas, The Ballad of Sucio’s Frog, opening Thursday, February 4 and running through Sunday, February 7. Show times include 2/4 at 7 pm, 2/5 & 2/6 at 8 pm and 2/7 at 2 pm. The production will take place in the Center’s Roy E. Disney Center for Performing Arts. Tickets are $15, $20, $25 with a $5 NHCC member discount and can be purchased at Ticketmaster outlets, Ticketmaster.com or in person at the NHCC box office. They lie between the mighty Río Grande and the Puertos del Cuerpo mountains of southern New Mexico. No one knows how old Sucio is, but he is, by far, the oldest person in Punta de Lanza. No one knows how rich he is, either, for he doesn’t keep his money in the bank. He is smart and knows more than one would think. Sucio is famous for several of his crops but he is figuring out how to deal with thieves that are invading his property and raiding his fields. He consults a local restaurant owner, an astronomer and a geneticist in hopes of creating a giant guard frog to protect his fields. As the cast of whacky characters embark on this ambitious project things become crazier and crazier creating a series of hilarious dilemmas resulting in an unforgettable story. Teatro Paraguas was founded in 2004 by an international group of actors and artists of various ethnic backgrounds to celebrate and present Hispanic, Latino, and Chicano poetry and theatre through bilingual performances of classic and contemporary plays, and dramatic readings of poetry incorporating music, dance, costume, and projections. The Ballad of Sucio’s Frog is directed by Mary Vaught Mier, a co-founder of Teatro Paraguas.
The NHCC, a division of the Department of Cultural Affairs, is dedicated to the promotion and preservation of Hispanic art and culture at the local, state, national, and international levels.
