The event is a team competition featuring four-man teams facing off in stroke-play competitions while representing their Association or Section. In years past, the Cup has seen names like Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Fred Couples, and Peter Jacobsen play in its annual tournament just to name a few and has become a hot-spot for college golf coaches to do their summer recruiting.
“We are honored to be able to host an event of this magnitude in Albuquerque”, said SCAGA Executive Director Matt Williams. Our long-term goal is to market Albuquerque, New Mexico and our entire Section as a National golfing destination for the recreational golfer and the tournament golfer. Showing the country our facilities, our hospitality and our great weather on a national stage like this can only enhance our already growing reputation.”
This years’ competition will be held at the renowned Isleta Eagle Golf Course. The Junior America’s Cup will join the already distinguished list of events hosted by Isleta including the NAIA National Championship, U.S. Open qualifiers, several Sun Country PGA Championships and the New Mexico Open on multiple occasions.
The Junior America’s Cup is a tradition that began in 1959 with representatives from junior golf associations in Mexico, Alberta, and Southern California. The three groups brought five participants each to play in a stroke-play team tournament that was unlike any tournament previously available to the junior golfer. The Cup expanded to eleven teams in 1972 with British Columbia, Idaho, Mexico, Nevada, Northern California, Oregon, San Diego, Southern California, Washington and Utah joining. Since 1974 six other junior golf associations have joined the Junior America’s Cup including Arizona, Hawaii, Colorado, the Sun Country, Montana, and finally Wyoming who joined in 2001.
2010 will mark the second time that New Mexico will have hosted the Junior America’s Cup after a stop at Tanoan Country Club in 1993. The event and all of its participants will be open to all members of the media.
