ALBUQUERQUE, NM - ¡Globalquerque! is thrilled to announce legendary blues singer KOKO TAYLOR will headline it's 2007 lineup, along with MICKEY HART's (Grateful Dead) band GLOBAL DRUM PROJECT with Zakir Hussain, Giovanni Hildago and Sikiru Adepoju (USA/India/Puerto Rico/Nigeria).
¡Globalquerque!, New Mexico's 3rd Annual Celebration of World Music and Culture will take place September 21 and 22 at the beautiful National Hispanic Cultural Center in Albuquerque, NM. Presenting 18 acts from five continents on three distinct stages over two days plus free family day programming, a Global Village, and an international film festival earlier in the week, ¡Globalquerque! is the only event of it's kind in the Southwest and Rocky Mountain regions.
Other artists on the remarkable festival bill include Moroccan star HASSAN HAKMOUN, Tibetan "goddess of melody" YUNGCHEN LHAMO, visionary Lakota/Anishinabe hoop dancer and indigenous Northern Plains flute player KEVIN LOCKE, Dominican guitar king PUERTO PLATA and his 6-piece ensemble, Senegalese kora master LANKANDIA CISSOKO, Celtic/Cameroonian rhythms from BAKA BEYOND, Cambodian pop from DENGUE FEVER, FIAMMA FUMANA (Italy), ILGI (Latvia), CHANGO SPASIUK (Argentina), LA FAMILIA VIGIL (New Mexico) ANJANI'S KATHAK DANCE OF INDIA, Chinese puppetry DRAGON ART STUDIO. Other acts will be announced as confirmed.
"We are really excited about ¡¡Globalquerque!2007," says Neal Copperman of AMP Concerts, festival co-organizer with Tom Frouge of Avokado Artists. "It's the exposure to unknown cultures where the real surprises happen. People come to see Koko Taylor and go home saying that they were blown away by Gnawan trance music from Morocco or Agentinian Nuevo Tango."
This year's ¡Globalquerque! is also the official New Mexico event for the 25th Anniversary of National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship Program. Ms. Taylor, Mr. Hussain and Mr. Locke are all NEA Fellows, as are leaders of the Anjani Dance of India and Dragon Art Studio.
