A baby’s first birthday is cause for celebration, and the ABQ BioPark will be hosting a BIG party for the Zoo’s BIGGEST baby, Daizy, the Asian elephant, from 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 28. All activities are included with regular admission.
Like any birthday girl, Daizy will get cake (specially made with hay and veggies) while party guests sing “Happy Birthday.” But this party is also an opportunity for the public to learn about elephants and how our actions matter when it comes to protecting them in the wild.
Elephant discovery stations will showcase the amazing adaptations of elephants and their behavior. By participating in fun games, party-goers can contribute to elephant conservation programs. Zookeepers will talk about the enrichment and training programs and the excellent care provided to the zoo’s multigenerational elephant herd each day. Children will find treats hidden in enrichment items, just like the elephants do, and then help make enrichment to be given to the elephant herd after the party. Thai music and dance, food, party favors and hands-on activities will complete the party atmosphere.
A New Girl Scout Patch
This birthday celebration also marks the launch of a Daizy patch for Girl Scouts. Girl Scouts who attend the event will fulfill their requirements for the patch.
A One-Year Old with Great Potential
Daizy herself is cause for celebration. Asian elephants are endangered, and their numbers in the wild are declining. Members of the Association of Zoos and Aquarium’s Elephant Species Survival Plan coordinate reproduction efforts to build a self-sustaining elephant population among North American zoos and wildlife centers.
The ABQ BioPark has been designated as an Elephant Breeding Facility by the group. Daizy was born on September 2, 2009. She is an important addition to the North American population of elephants and to the worldwide work being done to conserve this endangered species.
