50+ Athletes Can Now Register Online for 2018 New Mexico Senior Olympics State Summer Games

Online registration is open at www.nmseniorolympics.org to participate in the 2018 State Summer Games to be held in Albuquerque July 18-22, 2018. Local Games are happening in 22 counties around the state during March thru May. Registration for the State Summer Games and information on Local Games is on the NMSO website at www.nmseniorolympics.org. Athletes 50+ do not need to pre-qualify in Local Games to participate in the State Summer Games. However, athletes will be required to pre-qualify at this year’s State Summer Games to participate in the National Senior Games to be held in Albuquerque in 2019. This year marks the 40th anniversary for the New Mexico Senior Olympics State Games. 

Online registration is open through May 31, 2018 and late registrations will be available until June 8, 2018 for a late fee of $15. Dates and locations for all the sports and venues is listed on the website at www.nmseniorolympics.org. Athlete booklets and game flyers are available at senior centers in Albuquerque and around the state. December 31, 2018 will be the cutoff date to determine age divisions as athletes compete in 5-year age divisions, 50-54; 55-59; 60-64, etc. 100+. 

March is also a great month for individuals to sign up to volunteer to help with the State Summer Games. Volunteers can sign up to work a 4-hour shift of their choice. Wendy Luck is the new Volunteer Coordinator for the New Mexico Senior Olympics. Last year, more than 500 volunteers signed up to stage the State Summer Games. Wendy brings more than 20 years of volunteer management experience trained as an EMT and firefighter, Wendy has trained volunteers for emergency response and worked with veterans groups. Volunteers can also register to volunteer using the NMSO website by clicking on the “Volunteer” tab. Guidelines for volunteering are also listed on the website at www.nmseniorolympics.org. The State Summer Games offers 24 individual sport for men and women 50+ and is the largest multi-sport competition in New Mexico for active seniors. Cecilia Acosta, Executive Director of NMSO, said three new sports have been added for the 2018 State Summer Games: Hammer Throw, Powerwalk and Triathlon. 

The New Mexico Senior Olympics is dedicated to provide adults 50+ with opportunities for a healthy active lifestyle. Its mission is to promote physical fitness for seniors throughout New Mexico and provide year-round motivation for adults 50+ to participate in local, state, and national games. New Mexico Senior Olympics, Inc. is funded in part by the New Mexico Aging and Long Term Services Department for health promotion activities. The 2018 State Summer Games are also sponsored in part by the City of Albuquerque.
