516 ARTS is pleased to announce two concurrent exhibitions opening Saturday, November 3 showcasing New
Mexico programs that support professional working artists from around the world. Both exhibitions focus on
New Mexico artists working in a wide range of visual media.

Selected Alumni from Forty Years of the Roswell Artist-in-Residence Program
For forty years the Roswell Artists-in-Residence Program has supported visual artists from across the United
States and the globe. Isolated in southeastern New Mexico, the residency provides year-long support away
from the demands and distractions of the urban world while encouraging the free exploration of new directions
in contemporary art. The exhibition features nationally and internationally renowned artists who live in or have
ties to New Mexico including Stuart Arends, Eddie Dominguez, Stephen Fleming, Scott Greene, Diane Marsh,
Frank McCulloch, Robert ParkeHarrison and Raissa Venables. Curated by Stephen Fleming, Program Director,
Roswell Artist-in-Residence Program.

Stephen Fleming says, “Roswell is remotely located, away from the trends and noise of our cultural
capitals and provides the artists an opportunity to look inwardly, over an entire year, at the sources of
their vision and the reach of their talents. The Program is solely dedicated to the development of the
individual artist. Production of artwork is seen as a by product of creative introspection, not as an end
in itself. The goal of the Program is to be as free of institutional rigmarole as humanly possible. Those
artists who immerse themselves undertake a long process of personal discovery and it is hoped, a
stronger connection to the sources of their personal vision.”

New Mexico Artists from the Creative Capital Professional Development Workshop
This group exhibition presented with Santa Fe Art Institute features the work of 22 New Mexico artists
who participated in the Creative Capital Professional Development Workshop in 2006. This national
program acts as a catalyst for the development of adventurous and imaginative ideas by supporting
artists who pursue innovation in form and/or content in the performing and visual arts, fi lm and video,
and in emerging fi elds. Featured artists include Madelin Coit, Donna Loraine Contractor, RoseMary
Diaz, Christy Hengst and Joanne Lefrak. Curated by Diane Karp, Director of Santa Fe Art Institute, the
exhibition includes artists working in painting, photography, sculpture, drawing, video, poetry, music
and hand crafted furniture, with experimental video and new music compositions by Chris Jonas, handcrafted
cabinets and tables by Dennis Esquivel, luminous paintings by Sydney Cooper, complex drawings
by Timothy Nero and glass sculpture by Debbie Long.
Diane Karp says, “This talented group of artists came together at Santa Fe Art Institute last October for
an intensive weekend of discussions and presentations aimed at supporting dreams and providing the
tools and bolstering the will to realize those dreams. Out of this astounding workshop has come a group
of artists and writers who meet monthly to talk about work, share successes and generally serve as a
community of supportive creative artists. Making changes in one’s professional life is not easy and the
community helps to keep the energy high and the goals clear. The work of these artists and writers is
superb. We hope that you enjoy the exhibition. We have had a fi ne time making it happen.”
Founded in 1985, the mission of the Santa Fe Art Institute is the exploration of the intersection of
contemporary art forms and society: using the arts to empower voices, support creativity, enable
access through artists and writers residencies, outstanding pubic lectures, masterclasses, exhibitions
and educational outreach.
