New Mexico Symphonic Chorus Concert: Vaughan Williams and Britten

Hail Britannia! Sung at the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in Westminster Abbey, the Mass in G minor is technically difficult, but harmonically astounding. Vaughan Williams studied with Maurice Ravel in Paris, and dedicated this work to his close friend, Gustav Holst. Benjamin Britten sets W.H. Auden's poem to a wondrous English medieval carol in Hymn to St. Cecilia. His imaginative Festival Te Deum op. 32 has the freedom of Gregorian chant, but passion and energetic rhythm from the organ.
