2019 Martin Luther King Jr. Parade & March
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. served as one of the powerful leaders of the civil rights movement and is now remembered as symbol of peace. Celebrate his work this Saturday at a parade in his honor, which begins at the corner of University and MLK Avenue and ends in Civic Plaza with a special commemoration ceremony.
Albuquerque Comic Con
Albuquerque Comic Con is back and bringing the brightest comic and media talent to the Duke City for one amazing weekend. Dress up as your favorite character for photo ops with special guests, a costume contest, Foosball tournament and ‘Sci Fi Speed Dating’. Don’t miss out on the after parties, which take place throughout Albuquerque every night. New this year – a special free, sensory-friendly event for children with Autism hosted by talented cosplay artist Dava Renee.
3rd Thursdays at the Museum: Song of Songs
After work on the third Thursday of the each month swing by the Albuquerque Museum for music, fun programs, a cash bar and small plates at the Slate Café. This month learn more about the Visions of the Hispanic World Exhibit that is currently on display. Staff will guide you through an art project inspired by the exhibition pieces. Neshama Del Bosque, a Sephardic band, will fill the evening with live music.
January Half-Price Weekend at the BioPark
The Albuquerque BioPark is kicking of 2019 with its first half-price weekend. These weekends happen only four times a year! Special events will be taking place at all three locations – watch the Seals devour their favorite snacks at the zoo or the Sharks being fed their lunch by Aquarium divers. The Botanic Garden’s Mediterranean Conservatory is in full bloom; showcased by their Winter Fire Colors Show – where the fiery hues of the flowers and plants will provide a welcome relief from the winter’s chill.
Get Fit! Science of Fitness - Adult Night at Explora
Have a New Year’s fitness resolution but don’t know where to start? Explora has you covered at this 18 and over adult night! There will be plenty of fitness activities to choose from, including a 25 foot massive rock wall, a conditioning class presented by UFC Gym, a balance beam workshop by G Force Gymnastics and so much more! If you work up an appetite, Fresh Acai bowls and hot coffee will keep you energized.
Total Lunar Eclipse Viewing
A Supermoon Total Eclipse is making its way across New Mexico’s skies this Sunday. Take in this phenomenon using telescopes provided by the museum and the Albuquerque Astronomical Society. Live video streams of the eclipse from other locations around the world will be playing inside, along with other informational videos, posters and handouts to explain why the moon slips into this red, shadowy state. The next Supermoon won’t occur until 2021.
Concert: Pink Martini
Pink Martini is a rollicking around-the-world musical adventure. These twelve musicians have performed their multilingual repertoire on concert stages and with symphony orchestras throughout the world. The group just released its ninth studio album that features eight different languages – affirming the bands 22-year history of global inclusivity and collaborative spirit.
