Yjastros: the American Flamenco Repertory Company in Concert!

A breathtaking evening of Flamenco music and dance
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
ALBUQUERQUE- Yjastros is an outstanding feature of Albuquerque's cultural entertainment scene and audiences will once again be impressed with the artistry presented by Joaquin Encinias. Yjastros is unique as a dance company, dancers train together year round presenting a dynamic chemistry on stage, which unifies the ensemble of choreographic visions.  This years repertory will showcase the work of world class choreographers including Israel Galvan, Yolanda Heredia, Omayra Amaya and of course Encinias himself.

This high energy production demonstrates the versatility of the dancers as they master the complicated footwork of Amaya and Encinias in "Bulerias de la Calle".  Dancers demonstrate mastery of line and rhythm in minimal costumes allowing audiences to appreciate the individuality of each dancer on stage.  A piece by Encinias alone titled "Dime Que Te Pasa" shows a more playful side to the choreographer as dancers interact with each other in a light and upbeat tangos.

The Yjastros women elude the essence of grace and power in "Chocolate" which is danced in the traditional bata de cola a long dress with an extended train that requires a great deal of strength and control to master.  The traditional element of the bata de cola reminds audiences that although flamenco is evolving and full of artistic exploration, the traditional elements are timeless and beautiful.

In stark contrast to "Chocolate" is a piece by Israel Galván titled "Xicana Power".  This piece, inspired by the uniqueness of Albuquerque's demographics and unique flamenco community, pushes audiences to see flamenco in a new way as Galván's movement innovation is unparalleled in the flamenco world.

The large ensemble pieces will be contrasted by a new choreography by Encinias as three dancers are put to the ultimate test of athleticism and artistry in "El Trio".  The fundamentals of Encinias's choreography are present including the use of traditional flamenco gesture juxtaposed with a heightened spatial awareness and a highly developed musical composition.

An Yjastros concert would not be complete without the breathtaking solo work of Marisol Encinias and Joaquin Encinias as well as a new solo by one of the Yjastros women, Gretchen Williams.  The solo work is always an interesting contrast to the ensemble pieces and allows audiences to connect more closely with individual performers.  Both Encinias' have become renowned as American flamenco artists and audiences will be moved as they have the unique ability to connect personally with audiences through their movement and gesture.
