The New Mexico Bowl Plans Green Events For 2010

First ESPN Bowl to institute Sustainability Project
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. --- ESPN is bringing its sustainability efforts to Albuquerque as part of the 2010 New Mexico Bowl. The New Mexico Bowl, which is owned and operated by ESPN, will offer this project in an effort to create awareness and educate the fans and participating teams about the efforts necessary for a green future.

The team hotels, Sheraton Uptown and Marriott Uptown, are participating in the project. Each member of the traveling parties staying at the hotels will be issued a wood-based, compostable key card.

At the pre-game Fan Fest on Saturday morning in University Stadium’s North Stadium 4 lot, a Green Tent will be set up for recycling. All attending are urged to partcipate, bringing old batteries, cell phones and sporting equipment.

There will also be a t-shirt recycling program at the FanFest. People are encouraged to bring a t-shirt or sweatshirt from home. They will then have the option to have that shirt “upgraded” with a new silk screen image created with environment-friendly ink. This will be done at no charge.

“This is another piece of the New Mexico Bowl in which people can take pride and get excited about,” said Jeff Siembieda, New Mexico Bowl Executive Director. “This event is about a whole lot more than a football game and I’m happy that ESPN is able to bring this world class project to New Mexico.”

The New Mexico Bowl is one of two (BBVA Compass Bowl) ESPN Regional Television (ERT) owned and operated events to implement the sustainability project. ESPN’s goal is to increase participation every year by at least two bowls. The MAACO Las Vegas Bowl has already signed on for 2011.

The fifth annual New Mexico Bowl, featuring a representative from the Mountain West and WAC, will be played on Saturday, Dec. 18 at noon MT at University Stadium on the University of New Mexico campus. The game, which kicks off the FBS postseason, will be televised nationally on ESPN and ESPN HD.
