Albuquerque, NM–The 2007 Southwest Gay and Lesbian Film Festival is screening over 75 films from around the world during its week-long, multi-city run this year. Of these 75, some of the most important films originated in Spanish-speaking countries of deal with Hispanic culture.

“We are happy to be showcasing Spanish-language films from Latin America, South America, Cuba and Spain this year,” says Roberto Appicciafoco, Festival Director. “Considering where we are geographically, and the importance of Hispanic culture to New Mexico, it is vital to showcase films that reflect and enhance the Latino experience.”

Included in this group of fantastic films showing at the 2007 festival is DarkBlueAlmostBlack, a sweet comedy from Spain. Glue is an Argentinean film chronicling the coming-of-age of 15 year old Lucas, a precocious young boy whose best friend has fallen for him and whose rock band isn’t really going places. Two Homelands: Cuba and the Night, the first Cuban film in festival history, is a documentary about being gay in the oppressive Communist regime of Fidel Castro. And Two Sides of the Bed is a touching Spanish drama/musical/comedy about relationships, love and compassion.

The influence of Spanish culture is not exclusively the domain of feature films at this year’s festival, however: many of the short films playing are Latin in nature. During the screening of the Women of the World collection of short films, the audience will be treated to shorts from both Spain and Brazil. The all-male program Foreign Bodies brings to SWGLFF short films from Argentina and Spain as well as, from Brazil, the hot Cowboy Forever.
