516 ARTS announces the launch of the new website and call for proposals for ISEA2012 Albuquerque: Machine Wilderness - www.isea2012.org. In the fall of 2012, a group of New Mexico and regional organizations will present a symposium and season-long series of public events exploring the discourse of global proportions on the subject of art, technology and nature. The prestigious ISEA symposium is held every year in a different location around the world, and has a 30-year history of significant acclaim. It is an international honor for Albuquerque to be selected as the first host city in the U.S. since 2006 when it was in San José. This year ISEA2011 will take place in Istanbul, where Albuquerque will be presented to the international community as the host city for 2012. The ISEA2012 symposium will consist of a conference September 19 – 24, 2012 based in Albuquerque, and an expansive, regional collaboration throughout the fall of 2012, including art exhibitions, public events, performances and educational activities. This project will draw a wealth of leading creative minds from around the globe, and engage our local community through in-depth partnerships.
The title Machine Wilderness references the New Mexico region as an area of rapid growth and technology alongside wide expanses of open land, and aims to present artists' and technologists' ideas for a more humane interaction between technology and wilderness in which "machines" can take many forms to support life on Earth. Machine Wilderness focuses on creative solutions for how technology and the natural world can sustainably co-exist. ISEA2012 EXHIBITION - DEADLINE: October 15, 2011
The large-scale, multi-site, international exhibition for ISEA2012 will take place at The Albuquerque Museum and 516 ARTS, and outdoor, site-specific works will be located around Albuquerque and the region, some created in collaboration with scientific and technological communities. The exhibition will feature work that combines art, science and technology, demonstrating the role art can play in re-envisioning the world. It will be juried and curated through the international call
for proposals, now online at www.isea2012.org. Works will be selected by the ISEA international selection committee and
guest jurors including: Kate Bonansinga Director, The Gerald and Stanlee Rubin Center for the Arts - The University of Texas at El Paso; Steve Dietz , Founder, President & Artistic Director of Northern Lights.mn, Founding Director of the 01SJ Biennial, 2006, and Former Curator of New Media at the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; Irene Hofmann, Director/Curator, SITE Santa Fe, New Mexico; and Nancy Marie Mithlo, Associate Professor, Department of Art History and American Indian Studies Program, University of Wisconsin Madison.
50+ PARTNERS
The lead organizations hosting ISEA2012 are 516 ARTS, The University of New Mexico and The Albuquerque Museum. There are a total over 50 partnering organizations to date including: Albuquerque Balloon Museum, Visit Albuquerque, City of Albuquerque Public Art Program, ¡Explora!, Institute of American Indian Arts & Museum of Contemporary Native Arts, Intel, National Hispanic Cultural Center, New Mexico Consortium - Los Alamos National Laboratories, New Mexico Wilderness Alliance, Radius Books, Rubin Center for the Visual Arts, SITE Santa Fe and many others. Special programs will include the ISEA2012 Education Program for students and teachers, Artist/Scientist Residencies and a Latin American Forum.
FUNDING
Major funding support to date includes ISEA2012 participants: The University of New Mexico, McCune Charitable Foundation, Intel Corporation and The Albuquerque Museum Foundation. 516 ARTS is seeking additional funding support from corporate sponsors, grants from foundations and government, and contributions from individuals.
